Guy Martin's Great British Power Trip

Channel 4

Channel 4 is one of the UK's top 3 Broadcast Channels, they commission independent production companies to create programmes and documentaries for UK audiences. For this project they teamed up with Drax Group, one of the largest generators of electicity in the UK & Worldwide.

In this three-part Channel 4 documentary, Guy Martin explores how Britain generates its power and the complex engineering that keeps the country running.

We followed Guy Martin - Former British motorcycle racer, turned heavy vehicle mechanic, come presenter - as he delved behind the scenes of the inner workings of Britain’s busiest power station.

When Drax Group reached out to us to discuss a very rare occasion that they would be pausing the operation of some pretty heft machinery, to allow the filming of TV content, our brief was was to film as much as we possibly could over the course of two shoot days - and if there is something we are well-versed with, it’s running and gunning!

We captured every key part of the UK’s energy generation process — from sustainable biomass production to the industrial boilers, control rooms and even inside the cooling towers that use natural convection and recycled water to keep the plant cool.

Filming came with its challenges: accessing areas few people ever see, climbing ladders and manoeuvring kit through tight spaces. Inside one of the UK’s largest industrial boilers, the team even wore full air-fed masks and safety suits — picture a group of camera-wielding astronauts and you’re close.

Alongside filming the series, we also built a comprehensive video library of b-roll, giving the organisation a valuable bank of content for future communications.

Behind The Scenes Video

We felt very privileged to get to see and experience the inner workings of this site. It was a very successful two days of filming, we captured an abundance of footage, which continues to be heavily used for a range of internal and external marketing communications.
